A commitment to young people is a commitment
to the future
WHAT IS THE YOUTH COMMITMENT?
The Youth Commitment is a statewide initiative where organisations
such as welfare agencies, schools/education, industry/business and
individuals in the community sign a Charter highlighting their
Commitment to young people specifying actions which will assist young
people reach a Year 12 or equivalent level of education. It is a whole
of government and a whole of community commitment to young people’s
welfare through their education, skills and training pathways.
HOW WILL THIS HELP OUR YOUTH?
Year 12, or its equivalent, such as an Apprenticeship, is now
considered to be the basic educational requirement for life and work
in the 21st century. Each year nearly one in four 19 year-olds across
our region do not complete Year 12 or a Certificate 2 level of
education. Research demonstrates that most often these young people
will already have come from disadvantaged backgrounds often with
multiple barriers to finishing school. Part of this process is to
encourage a new approach relating to the importance of collaboration
around education and skills for young people.
WHAT IF WE ALREADY SUPPORT YOUTH ISSUES?
Most organisations already support young people. Collating the Youth
Commitment actions increases community awareness, highlights potential
partnerships and indicates unmet needs. The Youth Commitment will
stimulate ways of doing things better so young people will not ‘fall
through the gaps’ when transitioning between community services.
HOW DOES THIS BENEFIT ME AND MY ORGANISATION AND THE COMMUNITY?
The effect of not completing this basic education significantly
reduces opportunities for young people leading to wider social and
community issues such as longer periods of unemployment, lower income,
imbalance of justice for youth (& later as adults), mental and
physical health issues and broader community economic impacts. The
Youth Commitment initiative could mean the ability to employ and
retain appropriately skilled staff for employers, and may see less
reliance on the health and welfare system within the community.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
As a signatory to the Youth Commitment, your organisation will simply
register your specific Youth Commitment actions with the GSG LLEN.
These actions will then be collated and accessible on the LLEN website
www.gsgllen.org.au. We encourage your organisation to then incorporate
the Youth Commitment into your strategic and action plans. If all
organisations do this there is potential for greater cohesiveness
amongst services.
WHAT WILL THE LLEN DO?
The Glenelg & Southern Grampians LLEN will provide a framework
encouraging and supporting all services and organisations involved
with young people to build on their commitment to youth. The LLEN will
log all the Youth Commitment actions on our website and work with the
Youth Commitment signatories assisting them to carry out their actions
and commitments through specific coordinated projects, awareness
raising and lobbying. Our information pack explains the process in
more detail.
